“One of my earliest memories of challenging gender inequality was at age 13, when my high school subject line choices included sewing and cooking classes. I wanted to do technical drawing [a boys-only subject].
With my Dad being a builder, I grew up drawing house plans and designing room layouts. I fancied being an architect or interior designer, but no, apparently I had to learn how to be a good ‘house-wife’. I cracked it and marched up to the Principal’s office with my demands.
A couple of years later, I believe they changed the rules. Damn, always ahead of the times!
Oh, by the way – I’ve not baked a cake since high school and I don’t intend doing so any time soon.
Life is too short to spend it doing the unnecessary stuff.
So now, as a proud feminist and campaigner for equality; I actively encourage women to step up into leadership roles, through my book - Rock Your Stripes, blog writing, speaking gigs, media commentary, and initiating gender equality programs. I'm Founder of the ElevateHER online community, Regional Leader for LeanIn.Org global movement, Founder / President of Lean In Queensland - State Network, Founder / Chair of Lean In Australia - National Network, and Co-Founder of ElevateHER Australia Ltd - the social enterprise company that underpins all that.
We have recently established ElevateHER Australia Ltd, a for-purpose NFP company which provides a sustainable structure for our Lean in Australia networks and programs. Our aim is to increase circle engagement in communities, corporations and campuses, and enable better connection, communication and collaboration across Australia. We provide co-ordinated member events, online training, mentoring, and support to circle leaders.
We are excitedly developing a NEW ElevateHER Australia website, with a range of leadership program offerings to enable women to step up, stand out, speak up and lead change. Stay connected ...
